When was the last time YOU slept in the bushes in the pouring rain so that you weren’t abducted into a rebel army?

I can safely say never.

Unfortunately there are many in this world who cannot say the same.

When my girlfriend Denise and I visited Gulu in 2007 the region was relatively safe as the LRA army, led by Kony had moved into Central Africa. We ended up working with the WFP (World Food Program) to assist with food drops to the IDP (Internally Displaced Person) camps.  We were escorted by a heavily armed Ugandan army (whom incidentally, once arriving at a camp, would disappear to drink Marwa, a locally brewed alcohol) while the food was distributed.

Our time in Gulu was an overwhelming experience, to say the least. We were not naive to the situation in the area before arriving, but to see it first hand was discouraging and simply put, heartbreaking. It was life changing to see the aftermath of a community who had been terrorized for decades as they tried to pick up the pieces and move forward and we were humbled by the stories of the people we met.  This was more real life than I had ever experienced and I remember thinking that I had grown up in such a bubble of privilege and safety and I had taken it all for granted.  Since my visit there I have done what I can to support organizations like GuluWalk and Invisible Children. I often thought of the day (if ever) that Kony would be captured or killed.

Let’s be honest. Most of you had never heard of Kony, the LRA or even know where Uganda is. Until yesterday that is.

My mind was blown because of the attention that Invisible Children brought to Joseph Kony and the LRA and his reign of terror in Eastern and Central Africa through their Kony 2012 campaign this week. All of a sudden every tweet was #Kony and it seemed like every single one of my Facebook contacts had viewed the video (or at the least were re-posting the link).  While I do question how many people will go much further than watching the video I can’t help but be annoyed by any negative attention and controversy that Invisible Children is getting.  Some people have even questioned if Kony really is an evil man?  While I agree that the war we are all suddenly talking about is very complex I can’t help but (perhaps in naive desperation) hope that something good will come of all of this.   You can read Invisible Children’s response to the controversy here: Invisible Children.

Personally I don’t care WHO, WHAT, HOW or WHY when it comes to stopping the LRA. I just know the terror has gone on for long enough and the time is NOW. The world community has done very wrong by letting this go on for three decades and it’s time we all get along and focus on the end goal. Stopping Kony.

I don’t care if it is the responsibility of the African governments to resolve the complexity of this war.  I don’t care how intertwined and complex the war is.  I don’t care if the white man should stop trying to save Africa.  I don’t care who spends my donation dollars to pay the salary of the people who run these organizations and nor am I stupid to assume they don’t. I don’t care if Invisible Children goes all Hollywood with their campaign because look who’s paying attention now.

At the end of the day, I support this campaign for the women who are yet to be raped, and the children who’s innocence is yet to be stolen.  They are the people who really matter right now. Let’s not allow him to take more victims by losing sight of the issue.  Let’s not allow him to continue his senseless reign of terror.  Invisible Children are right. Stop at nothing to make him a household name. Make him famous. Get the world to finally pay attention.

If it stops him and one more child is saved, isn’t that all that matters?

Usually I just take photos, but sometimes I grumble.

I got myself in to a situation last year where I made a deal with the Town of Stouffville. They needed some photography to help to promote small business in the area and the farmers market. I needed my name put out there as I had just moved in to town. Through verbal agreement (and apparently my misunderstanding) I would be credited for each image in the paper. This is where I should have stopped, signed a contract and said “this is what is required to go in to the paper so that you can have my time and work and skills for free otherwise the image costs this much”. End of discussion. Of course I didn’t do anything of the sort (I’m so trusting of people’s good intentions!) and the entire transaction was sadly disorganized. Some of the vendors I was photographing (for free, in my own time) even had the nerve to be rude to me because they did not like the time of day that I came to take their photos. That part I just rolled with – some people can be really grumpy. Besides, I’m just snapping a few photos right?  However, that is where they are very wrong. But I will get to that in a moment.

In the end I was disgruntled about the job I did for the Town and I chalked it up to “experience” vowing to never enter in to something like that so naively again. Now erase from memory and move along. I did just that.  Until my (wonderful) boyfriend bought me some flowers for our anniversary and came home with a brochure he found at the flower shop advertising this years Farmers Market using my images – distributed by… the town! No credit, no permission. It’s appears to have been circulating since spring and this is the first I’ve heard of it. How rude?

Actually, it’s considered theft.

Anyway, I’m in the process of figuring out what to do next. Most professionals who know anything about copyright are advising I send a bill for the cost of the high res jpeg or demand they pull all of the flyers and reprint with credit. End of discussion. However, I still have to live with the palm to forehead D’OH and desire to kick my own butt for being so naive. Besides, my assumption is that they will never man up and pay anyway and I’m way to pregnant to stress myself out because of my own stupidity. I’d rather be day dreaming about decorating a nursery.

That brings me back to my point about “just a few snaps, right?”.  I came across a cool blog post about pro photogs that sums up a few things quite nicely.  I’m linking to it obsessively because I think it’s educational to those who wonder why photography is so expensive – if you want to know take a read.  (AND in my most pleasant tone – to those of you who have ever disrespected a photographers time by cancelling last-minute or not showing up at all – or simply undervalued the time and work involved  – this post is also for you..to this I add a grumble grumble).

We (as in photogs) are after all, just trying to run a business, make some money and pay our bills. Just like you.

I’ve copied and pasted in a few of the points from the Take off Your Mommy Goggles blog post which I find really important to me:

We are a business.

We have a specific skill.

Professional Photography is a very time intensive business.

Anyway, I have learned my lesson again. For the last time (that is of course – until the next time!).

Grumble grumble grumble :)

A message from the photographer’s camera (it’s not me, it’s her – she did it!)

I saw this on a blog about not so professional photographers and thought it was great.  I’ve had people make this sort of comment to me at least a half dozen times – probably more.  I once had someone tell me that professional photographers just have expensive cameras and get lucky in the right time and place.  Ya, that must be it… so next time it happens I’m challenging someone to a shoot off with my camera and we’ll see who comes out on top. Anyone? :)

Angie and Paul’s Wedding – Sneak Peak

Angie and Paul were married August 6th at the Country Garden Weddings in Erin, Ontario.  It was a super muggy and sticky day and we were SO happy that the rain held off  (it was supposed to thunder and lightening all day!!!!). Anyway, it held off until everyone was cozy and safe in the tent just in time for dinner.  They were married under a giant oak tree and they had croquet set up for the guests during the cocktail reception (so fun). Angie and Paul’s personal touch with every detail made for a memorable day and I really was so happy to be a part of it! I mentioned before when I posted their engagement photos that you only need to spend a few moments with them to see that they truly are best friends and soul mates – something that was echoed in their families speeches and throughout the day.  One of my favorite moments was their first dance (and subsequently a series of photographs from that moment are some of my favorite – see below). I think these should speak for  themselves.

Emily

Emily came to visit this week from Calgary.  (Her team designed my amazing website – flipp.ca). During our shoot it was incredibly hot and we just about melted in to the earth and then we realized we were being held hostage by a giant red spider. It was rather daunting to be crouching in grass once we spotted the enemy but we were brave and channeled our earlier years of running around barefoot at the cottage as kids. We ate spiders for breakfast in those days.

She’s stunning:

Forgotten Portraits

I always stumble across photos that I forgot about, or maybe I rediscover ones that I just didn’t take the time to look at properly. In any case, I was clearing off my computer and backing up my latest shoots and came across these that I took almost 2 years ago in anticipation of the photography show that I put together for a Gulu Walk fundraiser. I had intended to interview and photograph members of the Toronto Gulu community. I only ended up getting one of the three completed (scheduling problems) and I didn’t think it would have the same effect so I scrapped the idea entirely.  The interview I did with him was one of the most emotionally challenging things I have ever had to do..in hindsight I wish I hadn’t scrapped it.  A snippet from the interview:

Do not imagine now that there is peace everything is fine.  Now, more than ever is the time for support.  What we see now, it can be reversed very quickly.  Peace.  It may not be sustainable.  That man – he can come back.

Michela

Cute baby alert. Be warned.. she may make you want one!! She is so adorable so I couldn’t decide which to post for a sneak peak so I’m putting up way more than my usual. What a doll!!  Great shoot!

I can do it!! (Maybe not.. so tired.)

Jackson – Sneak Peak!

He is ten days old and he was perfect. He didn’t cry, barely fussed and was either content with the click of the camera or snoozing in the 100 degree heat of the room. What a sweetheart!

Andrea Smith Photography Reviews – Lui Family

Hi Andrea,

We went through all the photos yesterday and love them all! You did such a wonderful job - and you were really quick too! We’re going to have difficulties deciding which ones we want to frame!

Yesterday morning, Aidan got out his toy-camera and pretended to take pictures of us. He insisted we call him Andrea. LOL.

Andrea Smith Photography Review

In my endless effort to differentiate myself from the Groupon photographer I will be posting (and back posting) reviews from my clients to try and get those yucky Trueler reviews gone – I had another inquiry yesterday for a groupon booking and the coupon is actually EXPIRED! I`m starting to feel like quite the idiot trying to explain that I am not the correct photographer and the one they did buy it from is out of business and has completely disappeared.. and no, I (she) has not rebranded!

Lui Family Portraits – Oakville Waterfront

I took photos about 2 years ago for this family when Aiden was only 1. It was so nice to see them again and to see  Aiden so grown up – what a fantastic (not to mention extremely photogenic) easy going family!!  We had a lot of fun shooting at the Oakville waterfront -  gorgeous spot! !

Vivian – 2 months

Newborn shots are always best within the first 10 days because they are so sleepy and flexible and easy to mold. After that I usually recommend waiting until 6 months.  With that said there are always exceptions -I’m absolutely thrilled with how these turned out. She is a beautiful little girl and even had a nap on us mid shoot! I’m so glad we decided to go ahead with these shots..

Groupon Identity Crisis! The end??

It’s been about a year since my Groupon identity crisis. Over the past few months, as the deal came to an end, the inquiry for photo shoots began to pick up again and I was receiving daily emails and phone calls. I diligently emailed and called back every single person to let them know I was not the photographer who had offered the Groupon deal but we did have the same name and it was simply a case of mistaken identity. (I dont’ know why Groupon or the ‘real’ Groupon offering Andrea Smith photography did not do this themselves as it became apparent to me that she doesn’t have an online presence and is clearly not in business anymore). Anyway, most people were frustrated – as I’m sure I would be having bought a $50 photo shoot and thinking it was a legitimately great offer.  I advised most people to cancel their Groupon, get a refund and move on to a professional photographer. Unfortunately, going from the offer of a $50 1 hour family photo shoot which included a few shots on DVD (an insane offer in any professional photographers mind) to a more realistic 10 times the price (on average) is a little bit daunting and discouraging. (Unfortunately, I don’t think most people realize the time that goes in to the post processing. I base an hour shoot on about 10 hours of work and price myself accordingly. However, this discussion is for another post that I may get around to writing one day!!). In any case, I’m now stuck with a not so great Andrea Smith photography complaint coming up about 3rd or 4th when you google my name. The originally poster was kind enough to differentiate myself from the other photographer but still, I worry it is enough to turn some potential business away. At the least it seems to be over..
